Alan Phillips of our office was approached to act for a defendant who had been remanded in custody for just shy of one year. He had never been sentenced to a term of imprisonment previously, and had otherwise dated and minor criminal history. He had applied for bail immediately upon his arrest which had been refused. Further avenues were available for bail applications but were not pursued by his previous representatives. Our office was therefore engaged to act on behalf of the defendant.
Alan Phillips reviewed the matter and formed a view that the defendant had substantial prospects at a bail application. The application was made and after reading written submission and hearing oral submissions, the man was granted bail by the Ipswich Magistrates Court.
The man was released within a matter of weeks of engaging our office to act on his behalf. He intends to contest the charges at trial.
